VICTOR

Project VICTOR was launched on Wednesday 20 August 2008 by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy at Mowbray College.

Senator Stephen Conroy, Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy

VICTOR will deliver affordable high-speed broadband internet to rural and regional independent schools in Victoria enabling teachers and students to communicate globally.

AISV will install and manage a virtual private network (VPN) that will improve schools’ access to professional learning opportunities including educational information and communications technology applications. It will provide schools with a gateway to national and international online educational resources.

VICTOR will supply internet at a competitive price and deliver professional development opportunities and curriculum support materials to 92 regional and rural independent schools in Victoria and 35 Melbourne metropolitan schools in the first 12 months. When completed, all Melbourne independent schools will be able to access services through the VPN.

Video/web conferencing and remote and distance learning applications will be trialled.

There are wide-ranging benefits for students, teachers and their schools.  For students:

  • greater access to educational resources and curriculum materials
  • internet excursions
  • collaboration and relationship-building between campuses and schools, across the state, nationally and internationally.

Teachers will benefit from professional development opportunities. School management will receive electronic briefings and support materials.

This project is supported by funding from the Australian Government under the Clever Networks program.  AISV was successful in a competitive application for funding and about half the cost of VICTOR is being met by the government through the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy and the other half by AISV and Member Schools.

Agreement has been reached with Telstra to provide broadband telecommunications to AISV Member Schools as part of the Victorian Government’s existing service contracts.
