Procuring greener schools

Effective sustainable design involves a holistic approach and encompasses all aspects of a building’s design.  The response needs to be integrated to marry the architectural, hydraulics and services designs, as well as considering landscaping, materials selection, appliances and waste management during the construction process.

Successful sustainable design requires commitment from the outset. This includes:

• Setting sustainability goals and budgets during project inception
• Selecting consultants with understanding, experience and dedication to sustainability
• Designing the building to achieve the best practical outcomes
• Managing waste and pollution during construction
• Providing training and user guides at handover
• Using the right rating tool to benchmark sustainable design
• Reviewing performance during Post Occupancy Evaluation and operation
