Sustainability in schools

Sustainability in schools > Benefits of greener schools

benefits Benefits of greener schools

Green schools provide numerous benefits to the environment, the students and the school. In their construction and operation they lead to reduced greenhouse emissions, water consumption, pollution, natural resources consumption and waste. This can save annual costs due to reduced utility bills and consumption of goods. However, green schools have a much broader benefit than just the environmental footprint and life cycle cost of the facilities themselves. These include:

Improved learning outcomes

Schools should be places which lift the spirit. Daylight and natural ventilation have been shown to improve students' learning potential and results. Click here for more details.

Whole-School Approach to Sustainability

Students can learn the value of caring for the environment and sustainable living values through their understanding of the design and day to day operation of school facilities. Students take home ideas and attitudes which seep into the wider community. Click here for more details.

Community Leadership

Schools are at the heart of communities and have an ability to show leadership in sustainability. Click here for more details.

Funding opportunities

Sustainability in schools can open up access to grants and programs from government and non-government organisations. Click here for more details.

Reducing the real cost of air-conditioning

The impact of air conditioning in schools is not just increased operational and maintenance costs and greenhouse gas emissions. Well designed naturally ventilated schools can avoid instilling a life-long expectation that air conditioning is the only way to be comfortable.

A healthy environment

Schools which provide healthier places for teachers and students through better ventilation, daylight and reduced indoor pollutants and toxins will have healthier staff and a reduced risk of potential future liability problems.
