The role of independent schools

girl, peeking behind handsThere are more than 200 independent schools in Victoria, increasing the choice in education by providing a range of programmes, philosophies and educational opportunities. Through these options, independent schools contribute significantly to the quality and availability of education.

Independent schools support the diversity of Australian culture by educating more than 100,000 students in Victoria from across Australia’s cultural spectrum. More than 1,500 students with disabilities attend Victorian independent schools.

Nearly a third of Victoria’s schools are non-government. They are attended by more than 30 per cent of all Victorian students but students in non-government schools receive about 20 per cent of all government funding.

Families making an education investment in non-government schools save Victorian taxpayers over $1 billion annually or around $430 a year for every Victorian taxpayer. Continuing government support for independent schools is required to maintain the educational balance and promote a robust and diverse system
