The non-government school sector comprises systemic schools, which are groups of schools administered by a central organisation, for example, Catholic parish schools, and independent schools, each of which is a separate legal entity.

School and student numbers

AISV membership in 2008 comprised 173 non-systemic independent schools and 48 independent systemic schools. Of the 48 systemic schools, seven were also members of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria.

In Victoria there are:

  • 220 independent schools
  • 487 Catholic schools
  • 1,585 government schools.

Of the total of 835,399 students:

  • independent schools enrol 14.3 per cent
  • Catholic schools 21.9 per cent
  • government schools, 63.8 per cent.

Some independent schools have a particular religious or philosophical focus and others are non-denominational or inter-denominational. The religious affiliation or guiding philosophy of AISV Member Schools is as follows:
