School and student numbers

The non-government school sector comprises systemic schools, which are groups of schools administered by a central organisation, for example, Catholic parish schools, and independent schools, each of which is a separate legal entity.

AISV membership in 2007 comprised 165 non-systemic independent schools and 47 independent systemic schools. Of the 47 systemic schools, six are also members of the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria.

In Victoria there are:

  • 218 independent schools
  • 481 Catholic schools
  • 1,593 government schools.

Of the total of 835,399 students:

  • independent schools enrol 14.0 per cent
  • Catholic schools 21.5 per cent
  • government schools, 64.5 per cent.
