Funding principles

AISV supports more government funding for all schools – government and non-government.

AISV believes that all Australian students, wherever they go to school, are entitled to government support and that every parent, having paid their taxes, deserves support for their child’s education.

AISV supports the Socio-economic Status (SES) funding formula because it is based on student need, not school need. Under SES, children from families with the most, get the least. Funding for non-government schools is based on the financial situation of parents, not on the financial situation of schools.

The SES model provides a measure of the relative socio-economic advantage of the parents of a school community. It uses three key indicators – level of parent income, education and occupation. School communities with higher socio-economic status are considered more able to support their school and receive less government funding. Schools with a high SES receive a smaller proportion of funding based on the average cost of educating a student in a government school.

The SES system is transparent because it is based on ABS Census data. It is flexible and responsive to changes within school communities and encourages private investment in education. The wide range of family incomes in schools from all sectors indicates that it is not only capacity, but also commitment to pay that influences families to choose an independent school.

AISV believes that all Australian schools need more money, spent more effectively, to build an education system that will be the best in the world for creating a tolerant, diverse and prosperous nation.
