School Performance Information

Please scroll to the bottom of the page for contacts and links

Do you need to comply?

Yes

Conditions of compliance

Under the Australian Government programs for Schools Quadrennial Administrative Guidelines 2005 to 2008, all schools are required to make a commitment to ensure that School Performance Information is made publicly available in the prescribed format, within 6 months of the completion of the program year. That is, by 30 June 2008, schools must publish information relating to 2007.

If you have to comply, what do you have to do?

Schools must collect and publicise information relating to:

  1. Staff attendance
  2. Staff retention
  3. Teacher qualifications
  4. Teacher professional development
  5. Student attendance
  6. Proportions of Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students meeting national reading, writing, spelling and numeracy benchmarks
  7. Changes in benchmark results from the previous year
  8. Value added
  9. Average standardised assessment results for Year 9 and Year 10 students
  10. Senior Secondary outcomes
  11. Proportion of Year 9 students retained to Year 12 (or equivalent)
  12. Post-school destinations
  13. Parent, student and teacher satisfaction

The school performance information must be made publicly available in at least 2 of the following forms:

  1. a hard copy school annual report provided to parents and made available to prospective parents upon request
  2. a hard copy newsletter provided to parents and made available to prospective parents upon request
  3. a hard copy school handbook provided to parents and made available to prospective parents upon request
  4. on the Internet, using a URL address provided to parents and prospective parents upon request
  5. by means of a billboard or sign that is clearly visible to the public inside or outside the school.

If a parent can't access information in any of the ways set out above, the school must provide it in a way that the parent can access.

The school performance information must be presented in a way that does not interfere with the privacy of any individual.

The Regulations allow the Minister to consider proposals from school authorities for reporting arrangements and to determine whether these satisfy the Government's requirements. Under this clause the Minister may allow schools to build on their existing practices.

Schools are required to certify that they have published School Performance Information as set out in the regulations.

What are the consequences if you don't comply?

Independent schools receive funding from the Australian Government under the Schools Assistance Act 2004 subject to the conditions which are set out in the Act. To receive funding, the school must sign a funding agreement with DEEWR covering the 2005-2008 quadrennium.

The publication of School Performance Information is a condition under the Act.
