AISV Compliance Framework

Interstate Student Data Transfer Note (ISDTN)

Please scroll to the bottom of the page for contacts and links

Do you need to comply?

Yes, if your school receives funding from the Australian Government under the Schools Assistance (Learning Together - Achievement through Choice and Opportunity) Act 2004 (Cth.).

Conditions of compliance

The Interstate Student Data Transfer Note (ISDTN) and Protocol is a joint initiative between the Australian Government, State and Territory Education Departments, and the independent and Catholic education sectors.

If you have to comply, what do you have to do?

All education authorities (including the non-government sector) have agreed to implement, from 1 January 2006, a national system for the transfer of student information between schools when children move from one state to another. This national system will enhance the ability of the student's new school to place and support that student in a timely manner and with the assistance of accurate information from the student's previous school. The national system is based on using a common 'Interstate Student Data Transfer Note' and set of protocols.

When a student from another state enrols or applies for enrolment, the new school will follow a process to request the transfer of information from the student's previous school. This is done through the use of the ISDTN which requests information from three broad areas:

  • school information;
  • student progress and support needs; and
  • tudent behaviour and management issues.

What are the consequences if you don't comply?

Independent schools receive funding from the Australian Government under the Schools Assistance Act 2004 subject to the conditions which are set out in the Act. To receive funding, the school must sign a funding agreement with DEEWR covering the 2005-2008 quadrennium.

The use of the Interstate Student Data Transfer Note is a condition under the Act.
